OUR VIEW
Ahotel is perfect for those who want to stay somewhere quiet, but only five minutes drive from the old town - and just three minutes from the Ljubljana ring road, which also serves as a gateway to all other regions of Slovenia.
It is run by the Jeglič family who figured out - correctly - that Ljubljana is full of big, corporate hotels, but short on smaller, friendlier ones. They chose a location just outside the city centre (or exactly 2.2 km, as director Luka Jeglič points out) which can be easily accessed by car, local bus, bike or even on foot (about thirty minutes walk). The location used to be a local small business industrial zone, but is now being transformed into a very pleasant, green, residential area.
In fact it's actually a part of one of the most charming quarters of Ljubljana, Trnovo, where you can stroll by the River Ljubljanica, take a look at the church where Slovenia's most celebrated poet, Prešeren, first laid his eyes on his muse Julija, get a drink in the local trendy pubs or a meal at two of our favourite eateries in Ljubljana: Pri Škofu and Harambaša.
There's also a large free parking space, which is a bit of a rarity in Ljubljana.
ACCOMMODATION The building is very modern, with twenty-six bright and comfortable bedrooms, some with showers and some with baths, all with air conditioning, satellite TV and wireless internet (there are also a couple of laptops available for rent and use in the hotel's wireless reception). The rooms are on the first and second floors: so far there is no lift, but they're planning to build one of those vertigo-inducing outside glassy ones. The reception has a lounge bar and a breakfast area - when it's warm and dry, both are extended onto a large decked open terrace.
THE RESTAURANT There isn't one... but they do do very nice breakfasts in the morning, and teas, coffees and alcoholic drinks throughout the day and evenings. Anyway, there are far too many excellent restaurants to choose from in town.
THINGS TO DO Walking around Ljubljana
- one of the world's most walkable cities - where you
will find unique examples of Plečnik's architecture,
two beautiful rivers, countless bars and world-class
restaurants, the beautiful Tivoli gardens... the list
is much too long to feature here. Driving -
although Ljubljana is such a small city, a hire car
will give you access to so much more - Postojna caves,
the pretty town of Škofia Loka, the Karst region, Lakes Bled and Bohinj... or just driving through Europe's
prettiest country - all of these are just an hour or
so's drive away. Indeed, another half hour will get
you to Piran by the sea, the mountains or even Croatia. Eating -
Ljubljana has some excellent restaurants - see the Dining
and Wining pages. Shopping -
just like any European city, Ljubljana is full of designer
shops, clothes shops, trinket shops. Shops. Museums, galleries and, of course, Ljubljana castle are all very good.
According to Luka, the best way to get around is by bike, which can be rented from the hotel for 5 EUR a day. They also have a special arrangement with a local cab company, which charges about 4 EUR for a short drive to the old town. The staff at the reception will even give you their number, so you can call them on the way back, instead of relying on the taxis available in the centre at rather higher rates.
