Centre of Ljubljana's Old Town
OUR VIEW
So there we were, on our first evening in Ljubljana, prior to our three week tour of the country in search of more hotels. We wandered into the old town, considering where we would eat, when we glanced over at... Ljubljana's first boutique hotel, the Antiq. In we popped, asked for the owner's phone number and met the charming Darjono Husodo (Jon, pron. Yon) the next morning. Jon is half Slovene, half Indonesian and told us that he'd been running a similar venture in Indonesia, but decided that Ljubljana was where he wanted to be. Since we started, we could never figure out why there were no boutique hotels in a city that should be full of them, so it was happy meeting indeed.
There is a lovely lounge throughout the bottom floor, part of which serves as the breakfast room. There is no restaurant, but there are many excellent eateries within walking distance.
ACCOMMODATION The Antiq is a fully renovated building on Gornji trg just on the edge of the Old Town. It has been beautifully renovated and furnished throughout with - you guessed it - antique furniture, carpets and tapestries. There are just sixteen rooms, one of which is a suite and although the doubles are very spacious with en suite bathrooms, there are two tiny doubles which each have a private bathroom along the corridor. The beds are large and comfortable and the bathrooms beautifully finished. The suite is at the top of the house and is self-contained, comprising a lounge, kitchen, bathroom and terrace. Each room is detailed below. March 2008 update: all rooms (except 11) are now air-conditioned.
THE RESTAURANTS As we said, the hotel doesn't have a restaurant, but there are many fine places to eat within walking distance, including Trta, Foculus and Ljubljanski Dvor for pizzas, Harambaša for authentic Bosnian kebabs, Valvas'or for excellent Slovenian, Špajza to mix with the business set and Pri Škofu for very good lunches - even Namaste for authentic Indian. Plus many bars, cafes, ice cream parlours or just about anything you fancy. Ask at reception, they'll point you in the right direction.
THINGS TO DO Walking around Ljubljana
- one of the world's most walkable cities - where you
will find unique examples of Plečnik's architecture,
two beautiful rivers, countless bars and world-class
restaurants, the beautiful Tivoli gardens... the list
is much too long to feature here. Driving
- although Ljubljana is such a small city, a hire car
will give you access to so much more - Postojna caves,
the pretty town of Škofia Loka, the Karst region, Lakes Bled and Bohinj... or just driving through Europe's
prettiest country - all of these are just an hour or
so's drive away. Indeed, another half hour will get
you to Piran by the sea, the mountains or even Croatia. Eating
- Ljubljana has some excellent restaurants - see the
Dining and Wining
pages. Shopping
- just like any European city, Ljubljana is full of
designer shops, clothes shops, trinket shops. Museums,
galleries and, of course, Ljubljana castle are all very
good.
Watch a movie
at the Kolosej - a truly huge cinema complex on the
edge of town. All foreign movies shown in Slovenia are
subtitled, so you can hear the original language.

DRIVING TO LJUBLJANA Ljubljana airport: Take the E61 motorway south towards Ljubljana. Klagenfurt (Austria): Take the A2 motorway and then the A11/E61 towards the Karavanke tunnel. At the exit from the tunnel at Jesenice in Slovenia, take the E61 motorway towards Ljubljana. There is no parking available at the Antiq. If you are going to hire a car, you are advised to pick it up only for the rest of your trip. If you are staying in Ljubljana only, you should consider parking in one of the central underground carparks - a little expensive, but safe (especially from traffic wardens) and cool in the summer.
NOTE: there is now a vinjeta system on Slovenian motorways for collecting tolls. You can buy a vinjeta at any petrol station near the motorway or the airport. For 95/30/15 euros per year/month/week, you will receive a sticker that must be displayed on the front windscreen of your car.
