Centre of Ljubljana
Back when it was called the Hotel
Turist, this place was a bit of a favourite for us.
Of the 'exactly what is says on the tin' variety, the
Turist was unpretentious, cheap, comfortable and friendly.
We stayed a few times and had no qualms about getting
our friends to stay, too (we were all a little less
rich back then).
The City has now undergone a transformation. Before
WWII, it was called the Štrukel and owned by the Černe
family. After the war the hotel was nationalised
and the family left for the US and Australia, where
their daughter - Ana Marija - married another ex-pat
- Niko Krajc - and built a successful business in Sydney.
The hotel was denationalised a few years back, so the original
owners have bought back a majority share.
This is now one of the nicest, brightest hotels in the capital: a large, open plan lobby leads through to an internet corner, children's space, bar and restaurant. But best of all - they've retained the staff from way back we used to visit. So Erika's still there and her staff will make you feel comfortable - because they do too.
The bedrooms are brightly, yet simply furnished, providing you with a smile as soon as you enter. I guess one of our main criteria is, do the rooms make you feel welcome and happy?
Yup.

The restaurant serves a hearty
breakfast and is pretty good for lunch and dinner on a budget.
Walking around Ljubljana
- one of the world's most walkable cities - where you
will find unique examples of Plečnik's architecture,
two beautiful rivers, countless bars and world-class
restaurants, the beautiful Tivoli gardens... the list
is much too long to feature here.
Driving -
although Ljubljana is such a small city, a hire car
will give you access to so much more - Postojna caves,
the pretty town of Škofia Loka, the Karst region, Lakes Bled and Bohinj... or just driving through Europe's
prettiest country - all of these are just an hour or
so's drive away. Indeed, another half hour will get
you to Piran by the sea, the mountains or even Croatia.
Eating -
Ljubljana has some excellent restaurants - see the Dining
and Wining pages.
Shopping -
just like any European city, Ljubljana is full of designer
shops, clothes shops, trinket shops. Shops.
Museums, galleries and, of course, Ljubljana castle
are all very good.
Watch a movie
at the Kolosej - a truly huge cinema complex on the
edge of town. All foreign movies shown in Slovenia are
subtitled, so you can hear the original language.
The City Hotel has a three conference
rooms that are suited to medium-sized events.
Slovene, English, German, Italian,
French

More than welcome.
Summers are warm, with July and
August are the hottest months, with daytime temperatures
around 25C, while during spring and autumn you can expect
around 15-20C.
Winters can be very cold indeed, with deep snow sometimes
during January and February.
The City Hotel is open throughout
the year.
In the summer, shorts, T-shirts,
sturdy shoes or boots, something warm for the evenings
and something waterproof in case it rains, for daytime
adventures. In winter: wrap up!
