OUR VIEW
The Lovec was reopened in May 2005, having been bought by the Slon in Ljubljana, both of which are a part of the Best Western chain. The original hotel (see picture, below right) had built a good reputation since the 19th century, along with its excellent restaurant. However, the business failed eventually and the building fell into disuse.
Situated in the centre of Bled, on the main road (Ljubljanska cesta), the renovated building is now a modern four star hotel, comprising 52 guest rooms and eight suites. The fine standard of workmanship is due in part to input from EU development funds.
There is a swimming pool and whirlpool in the basement and three saunas: steam, Finnish and infra red. Massage is also available.
ACCOMMODATION
All rooms have wooden floors, air conditioning and free ADSL. We stayed in December 2005 and found the accommodation very comfortable indeed. Many of the rooms have balconies with views across the lake, and a few have jacuzzis. Room service is available most of the day.
THE RESTAURANTS
The hotel restaurant can
best be described as 'Slovene/European' - good traditional Alpine fare and a few lighter dishes.
The patisserie is outstanding, and you really should try the local delicacy Kremne rezine (cream cake - yum).
There is also a pub, which has tables outside on the patio in the summer: great for kicking back and gazing across the lake.
WORKING UP
AN APPETITE Go hiking. Around
the lake, or walking trails lead you up over mountain
passes to alpine pastures or along river valleys to
hidden waterfalls. Fishing. A permit will
cost around £75 a day, which can be arranged for
you. Golf.
There is an excellent golf club nearby. Driving to Lake Bohinj
(larger and more primeval than Bled), Ljubljana
or just about anywhere in Slovenia: allow an hour to
get you just about anywhere up to two to get you
anywhere else. Water Sports: White water
rafting and kayaking can be arranged from a number of
expert companies - charges are around £25.
