OUR VIEW
At first glance, you may think
that Nebesa is nothing to write home about. It's B&B,
consists of four chalets sleeping just two people each
and sits nine hundred metres up on a mountain. Put it
this way: we have had clients (male and female) crying
when it was time to leave.
Nebesa means 'Heaven' in
Slovene, and was the name of the old ruined ski lodge
Bojan and Katja Roš (pron. Boyan / Katia Rosh) found one day on a walking trip.
They bought it, hired the best new architect in Slovenia
and turned Heaven into a paradise. Bojan (a doctor)
and Katja (a journalist) are fantastic hosts - always
ready to chat, help... or leave you entirely alone.
Apart from the chalets, there is a
larger two storey building (built into the side of the
hill, so it looks like one), where there is a beautifully
furnished common dining room with a big kitchen, a fitness
room and another housing a small heated pool and a jacuzzi.
Often, while sitting on your terrace, you can see representatives
of the local deer community, grazing near the perimeter
fence. But the main activity at Nebesa is simply taking
in the view, contemplating the wonder of nature and
kicking back. If you want to really get away from it
all, Nebesa can seem like heaven.
In fact, Nebesa
is the coolest place we've ever stayed in. OK, so we
cried, too.
The first thing you'll notice
is the almost mystical peace, which isn't surprising,
given that you'll be 900m above the rest of humanity.
There are just four chalets - each sleeping only two
people - angled just so that you feel entirely alone.
The entire front wall is glass, so that you have a completely
unrestricted view across the Soča Valley. Even if it's
not a clear day, gazing at the mountains above the clouds
can be mesmerising. But enough of the view: the chalets
are beautifully designed, gorgeously furnished and perfectly
functional. We did wonder at the lack of at least breakfast
being offered... until our first morning. You will find
everything you need in the fridge, so you can make breakfast
at your own leisure, without having to face another
human being. Much better than room service. The beds
are very comfortable - only take care: I nearly brained
myself a few times on the steeply sloping ceiling. Tall
people: take a lot of care.
WHERE DO WE EAT? Apart from breakfast, which is
included, meals are not provided at Nebesa. However,
local cured meats, cheeses and wines are available in
the little communal cellar, where you can sit, munch
and chat, take them up to the communal dining room or
even to your own chalet.
Happily though, you will be only a
short drive away from some of the best restaurants in
Slovenia - in fact, some of the best restaurants we
know anywhere, including their daughter Ana's place, Hiša Franko.
WORKING UP AN APPETITE Go hiking.
Walking trails lead you up over mountain passes to alpine
lakes or along river valleys to hidden waterfalls. Bojan
and Katia will advise. Fly-fishing.
The Soča river is the home of the unique marble trout.
A permit will cost around £75 a day, which can
be arranged for you. Sitting
by the Soča river is a favourite pursuit, jumping in
the river is also a favourite pursuit for those who
like their water cold. White water rafting and kayaking can be arranged in
Kobarid or Bovec from a number of expert companies -
charges are around £25. Canyoning, paragliding, gliding and skydiving (July/August)
can also be arranged for the terminally crazy.
Full day trips can also be made
to the coast, the Postojna caves, Lakes Bled and Bohinj and Dobrovo (for wine lovers).
LANGUAGES Slovene, English, German, Italian
CHILDREN Not until they grow up and make
their own booking.
WEATHER You might be in the mountains,
but the Soča Valley is warmed by winds blowing up from
the Adriatic. July and August are the hottest months,
with daytime temperatures around 25C, while during spring
and autumn you can expect around 15-20C. Evening temperatures
will be rather lower, so bring something a little warmer.
The area does boast the highest rainfall in Slovenia
(which is why it is so lush), so expect at least one
rainy day.
WHEN &
HOW LONG Nebesa is open throughout the
year. Indeed, it is an amazing place in what would otherwise
be thought of as bad weather: you feel as if you are
a part of it all, while feeling safe, cosy and yummy.
Discounts for more than one night.
TO TAKE WITH YOU This is not the place for suits
and high heels - shorts, T-shirts, sturdy shoes or boots,
something warm for the evenings and something waterproof
in case it rains, is best. Mostly, take your cares and
woes, nervous ticks and stress. You will leave them
at Nebesa.
Previous customers:
Bojan and Katja made our holiday at Nebesa the best. They gave us just the right amount of attention - helped us and assisted without intruding on our space.
We will definitely go back and visit (probably in the summer) to see the view in a different season (we'd love to see it all year round!) Its truly incredible.
We had a fantastic holiday in Slovenia - Nebesa was fabulous - a MUST for anyone travelling to Slovenia!
The hotel was amazing, more of an "experience" than an hotel. We were disappointed with the weather, which affected most of Europe at the time, but took full advantage of the views and peace. Our photographs look more like postcards than holiday snaps.
Nebesa was unbelievable. It took us several hours of simply walking around the place, soaking up the top-class accommodation, the magnificent views, the facilities (swimming pool, gymnasium, dining, sauna) - our mouths open in amazement - we were silent, not able to put our thoughts into words that made any sense.
And the hosts were lovely too. We cannot wait to return, hopefully with friends or other family members.
I have never been to a place before that so exceeded expectations.
When we arrived at Nebesa, Jane and I weren't talking to each other. Not because we'd had an argument or anything, just that we were walking around the place for a couple of hours speachless at how lovely it was - we couldn't say anything, just had our jaws dropped.
Can't wait to go again.
Many thanks for all your suggestions which were spot on - we would never have heard of Nebesa (magic indeed) or visited Korabid and Hisa Franko otherwise - everything went very smoothly and Katja and Bojan were just wonderful - turning up with home made butter and jam, cherries and cutting us prsut and local cheese.
Hello Bob - just a quick note to say that everything you said about Nebesa was true: we did cry before we left. What's more, Katja and Bojan were the perfect hosts and the restaurants in Kobarid were wonderful. Thank you for helping us recharge our batteries.
Hi Bob. Nice to hear from you. We had a wonderful time at Nebesa. It was everything your brochure had promised and more; Katja and Bojan were the perfect hosts and gave us lots of good information on walks etc. We were not sitting on top of a mountain for the week - we were walking up others! We will definitely be returning.
What a brilliant place!!! Such kind hosts and made us feel so welcome. They were there when we needed them and not when we didn't. The set up was perfect, especially the leisure facilities and the food arrangements. Had the weather been bad we could have holed up there for all 4 nights, but as the weather was gorgeous we took advantage of the fantastic walks in the area. We also ate at Hisa Franko one evening and that was also a real treat.
We really didn't want to come home.
Dear Bob: One question is still unanswered in my mind. Do i tell everyone what a wonderful holiday Andrew and myself had in Sloveneia or do i keep quiet about the gems we found particularly Nebesa? what a jewel. With many thanks and wonderful memories.

DRIVING TO NEBESA Ljubljana Brnik: Take the A2/E61 towards Jesenice, and then follow the signs to Vršič. From the top of the pass the road wibble-wobbles down the Trenta valley along the Soča. Drive through Kobarid and take a right turn at Idrsko. Drive on to Livek. Journey time about 2.5 hours. Note that between December and early April, the pass might be closed, in which case, do this: take the A1/E61 south from Ljubljana. Take the exit at Razdrto towards Nova Gorica, where you should take the exit towards Deskle, Kanal and Tolmin. At Idrsko turn left towards Livek. Journey time about 2.5 hours. Trieste: Drive to the border at Goriza into Nova Gorica, then take route 103 towards Kanal, then Most na Soči, Tolmin and onwards towards Kobarid. Before Kobarid at Idrsko, turn left towards Livek. Journey time about 1.5 hours. The Car Train: an excellent route if you are staying to the east of the Soca Valley first (e.g. Ljubljana, Bled, Bohinj, Dolenjska). Time your journey so that you get to Bohinjska Bistrica in time to catch the car train (usually between 16:30 and 17:00, timetable here), drive on, put on your handbrake and sit back while you are trundled through the mountains to the Soča Valley: 45 minutes of bliss! At Most na Soči, drive north to Idrsko.
At Livek: Take the left turn towards Kuk - Nebesa is about 1km up the hill.
NOTE: there is now a vinjeta system on Slovenian motorways for collecting tolls. You can buy a vinjeta at any petrol station near the motorway or the airport. For 95/30/15 euros per year/month/week, you will receive a sticker that must be displayed on the front windscreen of your car.
