OUR VIEW
Back in the 1930's Slamič (pron. Slamich) had a reputation as one of the best-loved institutions in Ljubljana life. But along came the bad, red people, who nationalised just about anything of any worth, including family-owned enterprises such as this. Fast-forward to the very recent past, when the owner's descendents bought back the property from the state, with a view to re-establishing the name of Slamič as representing all that is good in Ljubljana's blossoming tourist trade. Originally opened as a 'B&B' (the powers that decide on hotels' designations still being firmly rooted in the dull past), this is actually what us lot in the rest of the world would call a HOTEL (caps for the Slovenly authorities).
And a very nice hotel it is, too: central location, lovely rooms, terrace, bar, breakfast lounge, coffee and tea shop in reception, great staff, meeting room, small concert hall (!), and weekly performances of something arty.
As far as we're concerned, a lesson to many hoteliers in the country.
ACCOMMODATION The guest rooms are decorated in cool shades of what used to be called Magnolia, but is now probably referred to by the style cognoscenti as Shaved Cep, or Silken Bum-fluff or some such. Coolness is also ensured during the summer months with air-conditioning in all rooms.
But seriously, the beds and mattresses (from French company Treca) are the best in the country, and they are supported by beautifully waxed wooden floors. All of the furnishings are simple yet elegant... and you'll have trouble remembering you're in a city-centre hotel.
THE RESTAURANT There isn't one... but they serve a very good buffet breakfast, either in the breakfast lounge (the only room in the house where they have managed to preserve the original decor), or on the sprawling roof-top terrace. Anyway, you're just a step away from some of Ljubljana's finest.
THINGS TO DO Walking around Ljubljana
- one of the world's most walkable cities - where you
will find unique examples of Plečnik's architecture,
two beautiful rivers, countless bars and world-class
restaurants, the beautiful Tivoli gardens... the list
is much too long to feature here. Driving -
although Ljubljana is such a small city, a hire car
will give you access to so much more - Postojna caves,
the pretty town of Škofia Loka, the Karst region, Lakes Bled and Bohinj... or just driving through Europe's
prettiest country - all of these are just an hour or
so's drive away. Indeed, another half hour will get
you to Piran by the sea, the mountains or even Croatia. Eating -
Ljubljana has some excellent restaurants - see the Dining
and Wining pages. Shopping -
just like any European city, Ljubljana is full of designer
shops, clothes shops, trinket shops. Shops. Museums, galleries and, of course, Ljubljana castle are all very good.
