Before and since we were married at Pristava Lepena in 2001, we travelled to and around Slovenia about four times a year. Almost every time we returned to London, we read the odd glowing report in the press... but inevitably about the wrong things: Slovenia was always praised, but faintly.
In 2005 we embarked on a research project that would culminate in our Slovene Dream. Along the way, we found that although there were many hotels we would gladly stay in, they were ill-represented by the local tourist board - and not least by its representation in the U of K. We therefore adopted a policy of dealing directly with the hotels, which are always chosen in the same way: we stay in them, we eat their food and review their staff, and if we like 'em, we book 'em. That way, you know absolutely that if we recommend a hotel, it must be pretty good.
Unlike every other agency.
We sincerely hope and trust that when you visit
this gem of a country, you'll return home with a huge
grin. And when you do, please tell us about it. And we'll tell the rest of the world. |

Bob Burgher
Part English, part Canadian, part
Irish, part German, plus many other smaller parts, Bob
is a mongrel who has spent much of his life taking his
foreign parts to foreign parts. He's equally happy languishing
in five star hedonism in Tokyo, or trudging across the
tundra (mile after mile) lugging 50lb of camping gear.
OK, so he hasn't done the latter in many a year, but the
memories are fond.
Bob's professional life has encompassed design (web, exhibition,
CI, advertising), marketing, management consultancy and
event coordination/design (again). It's through his career
to date that Bob has experienced innumerable hotels, restaurants
and travel in countries across the globe, initially as
the recipient and later as the organiser for both corporate
and individual clients.
Even Bob's personal interests are 'offshore': he has a
passion for World (as opposed to off-World) music and
cinema and a love of cooking, drumming and... |
Darinka Bunjevac
Mostly Slovene (and a little bit
Serb), Darinka has a degree in journalism which she put
to good use on the foreign desk of Slovenia's commercial
TV station, Pop TV. Her travel experiences during this
time were slightly more extreme than us ordinary folk
tend to get, reporting from Vukovar and Sarajevo during
the Yugoslav crisis.
She has more recently plied her trade as a producer with
the Slovene section of the BBC World Service, for whom
she has reported from the USA, Sweden and Brussels amongst
others.
Darinka speaks in many tongues, including Spanish, French
and Serb, while a love of foreign culture (especially
in music, food and wine) has been invaluable
in her understanding of the peoples she visits.
Darinka has been studying wine for the last year or so and recently gained her Advanced WSET certificate. |

Andrej Bergoč
A database programmer by day,
Andrej is our ace in the hole - not because of his computer
skills, but because he knows more about Slovenia than
anyone we know. Has also travelled extensively outside
Slovenia, including Nepal, Turkey and Italy. When Andrej
sees a mountain, he's not happy unless he's climbed,
biked, hiked or skied on it. |
Melita Stolnik
In her capacity as senior journalist
on the foreign desk with a national TV station, Melita
(Beba) knows all there is to know about travelling in,
to and from Slovenia. She also produces for German TV
stations and has reported from Vienna, Moscow, Bejing
and Shanghai. |
