Winter-time in Bled conjures up a kind of special, almost magical beauty. The snow-bound castle and island, encircled by a sparkling winter landscape, will stay in your memory for a lifetime. Miles of snowy paths, from the frozen lake into the heart of the Triglav National Park are an invitation to hikers and amblers alike.
Bled is the more 'active' centre and has quite a few restaurants that we would certainly recommend. Straža, an easily accessible ski-slope in the centre of Bled (with artificial snow when needed) and flood-lighting, promises good skiing throughout the winter season.
For those of you who prefer cross-country skiing, a variety of tracks is drawn in the vicinity of Bled centre, while for the more demanding there are over 60 km of cross-country tracks on the high-plateau of Pokljuka just 20 km from Bled. Bohinj has access to more skiing, including Kobla (22km), Vogel (30km), Soriška planina and Pokljuka, the first two being accessible by ski-bus. |

Kanin is the only ski resort in Slovenia where the skiing grounds extend above 2,000m. The season lasts from December until early May. Kanin is a true high-mountain ski resort, far above the tree-line in the Julian Alps. Due to the altitude the pistes seldom freeze and offer the pleasure of skiiing on dry snow during most of the winter. Another special feature of Kanin is its sunny position and magnificent view far into the heart of the Alps and down towards the Mediterranean. When the visibility is good one can even count the ships in the Bay of Trieste. The local town is Bovec, where we have some excellent hotels, including the gorgeous Dobra Vila. |

Kranjska Gora is the largest ski resort in Slovenia and offers the most diverse winter sports package in the country. The lowest slopes are easily accessible and rise to a giddy 1,500m. Suitable for all levels of competence, this is a resort where you can be sure of finding an excellent skiing holiday. Podkoren is the site of the mighty Planica ski jump - the highest in the world - while Vitranc hosts the annual men's slalom and giant slalom races. We have a number of hotels and rental properties within easy reach of the best skiing in Slovenia. Although we do not recommend many of the hotels in the town itself (garish, nasty casino hotels - all owned by the same company), there are some very nice alternatives!
Podkoren is a charming little village about five minute's drive away. It shares the same slopes as Kranjska Gora but in our view is a much nicer place to stay.
Mojstrana is about a fifteen minute drive, and has one smaller ski trail, plus night skiing. |

Krvavec (pron. Krvavets) is just 10km north of Brnik airport and is very popular with the denizens of Ljubljana, which is about 30km to the south. The ski slopes are mostly on alpine pastures, so skiing is possible even without thick snow cover. The excellent slopes are very accessible, as the new gondola lift takes only seven minutes to reach the top. As well as winter sports, Krvavec offers a rich entertainment program throughout the season, including a Lumberjack Weekend, the Jože Požen Snow Weekend, Carnival on the Snow, recreational ski races etc. |
