Travelling to and around Slovenia

Getting There: For those of you with a shaky grasp of Slovenia's geographical location, think of it as sitting on Italy's shoulder. If you're not sure where Italy is, maybe your holiday money would be better spent on an atlas. In other words, it'll take about two hours to fly from the UK (or 18 hours by car, or 24 hours by train). In other other words, closer than Greece, southern Spain or Turkey, and much closer than the Canary Islands. That's all you really need to know about travelling there - so just go and buy a ticket. Now.

Being There: Try to think of Slovenia like the TARDIS: tiny when viewed from the outside, but huge from within. It seems to get bigger the more you travel within it, but conversely, any one area, town or city (including Ljubljana) is small enough to walk around - not in a day necessarily, but a week's holiday and a comfortable pair of shoes will provide you with all the scenery you could wish for. The thing is, Slovenia has more scenery than you can imagine, let alone wish for.

Or, many people compare its size to Wales (true) - so think of it as Wales on steroids: Wales has the Irish Sea, Slovenia has the Adriatic; Wales has Snowdon, Slovenia has the Alps; Wales has a rich history of chapel, Slovenia has vineyards. Got it now?

You possibly won't need a car in Slovenia... but there's so much you will miss without one. Furthermore, driving in Slovenia is pretty easy: the roads are very good (with new, beautifully integrated motorways gliding through the countryside) and although most Slovenes own a car, traffic is refreshingly light (compared to the UK).

We choose everything the same way we choose hotels: we try 'em, then keep the best.
Here is the link to AVIS car rentals.

Public transport is OK (i.e. it's usually there when the timetable says so), but it's not brilliant for getting to see the interesting bits around the countryside. For those of you who would rather not drive, we can arrange transfers.

The Guides and Stuff: Recently we have been monitoring the exchanges on travel websites like Trip Advisor and the like. Just beware that, although this all seems like a good idea... would you be willing to have your holiday arranged for you by a clerk/bus driver/company director/nurse? Nope. So what about 'local experts' who eagerly want to tell you about their country... even though they don't actually work in the travel industry? Nope, not them either.
