La Subida, Collio, Italy
The hotel we chose to spend five nights of our 2012 summer holiday: lovely people, beautiful accommodation and cuisine worthy of its Michelin star. Plus a swimming pool. Bliss.
Accommodation
Some of the houses are called 'Granny's Houses', so you won't be surprised that they are charming and rustic and snuggly comfortable; the others (Del Bosco) are modest on the outside and modern/minimalist on the inside - kind of m 'n' m 'n' m. The largest and best of these is Del Acetaia, which is a beautiful place to stay. All are scattered through the trees above the road, within a pleasant stroll to the pool (which also has a child's paddling pool). The furnishings are generous both outside and out and all in all this is a lovely place to stay and relax... but you do need to get out and investigate the area!
Dining
The main restaurant is situated across the (country) road and has been central to La Subida's attractions since its inception. It gained a Michelin star a while back, and although the family are happy about it, they are not what you would call proud. "They can take it away - or give us another - if they want: we'll just carry on doing what we're doing". A laudable attitude for any restaurant. We can confirm, however, that they certainly do warrant at least one star - and that it is astonishing value for any number of them.
This is also where you'll get breakfast, which is truly sublime.
There is what Slovenians call a gostilna (osteria) near the houses, which is leased out to other management by La Subida. We'd recommend it for maybe a plate of pasta, but don't expect much if comparing it to the 'real' restaurant.
Self Catering
Each house has a fully-fitted, but modest, kitchen: certainly good enough for anyone to provide their own meals. Personally, I think it would be a shame to have such wonderful local produce available and not have a go at cooking it!

In the summer, shorts, T-shirts, sturdy shoes or boots, something warm for the evenings and something waterproof in case it rains, for daytime adventures.
More than welcome.
La Subida is open all year.
Collio leans against the Slovenian border and is just an hour's easy drive to the Adriatic, so you can expect very warm summers. July and August are the hottest months, with daytime temperatures around 25C, while during spring and autumn you can expect around 15-20C. Evening temperatures will be slightly lower, so bring something a little warmer.
