The more astute amongst those returning to our little website will notice some changes - and some quite huge ones are on their way. As far as our hotels are concerned, we are fine-tuning our portfolio to ensure that we really are offering only the very best that Slovenia has to offer. From now on, if you see a hotel here, it's because we have personally tried it and liked it.
If it's not here, we probably didn't like it. |

LJUBLJANA |
| A magical city by anyone's
reckoning, Slovenia's capital will captivate you with its charms.
The accommodation we have chosen should suit anyone's
budget and anyone's taste
(ultra-modern through quaint to traditional). As Ljubljana
is a perfectly-sized city, all our hotels are
perfectly placed, with easy access to the galleries, shops, cafes, museums and restaurants. Hire a car and you can visit Postojna, Bled, Kranjska Gora or even the coast for the day. |

ANTIQ
A real find and a real surprise for us during our 2006 tour. We always wondered why there wasn't a boutique hotel in Ljubljana. Luckily, the owner of the Antiq asked himself the same question.

SLAMIČ
One of the newest hotels is actually owned by one of the oldest families. What was once a thriving restaurant and guest house fell into disuse and ruin under socialism. Some years ago the family bought the building back and turned it into one of Ljubljana's nicest hotels and coffee bars. |

ŠKOFJA LOKA |
| This lovely little medieval town is a joy to walk around: beautifully preserved old buildings, each with a little plaque detailing its history, winding cobbled streets and castle atop the hill. The surrounding countryside is equally beautiful and presents its charms to walkers of all abilities. |

THE
SOČA VALLEY |
| As far as we are concerned,
the most beautiful valley in Slovenia. Dominated by one
of the world's most beautiful - and officially one of
Europe's four cleanest rivers: the Soča (pron. Sotcha). You'll never forget the Soča, as its incredible
turquoise colour will flow right into your memory and
stay there. From its source it flows about 100km down
to the Adriatic, through beautiful and almost clichéd
mountain scenery, splashing its rich hue through old
forests, vertiginous limestone mountains and Sound of
Music meadows rich in alpine flora. |

LAKE
BLED |
| As proof of how fickle the tourist industry is (plus how on the ball we are), we were not convinced at all when we launched, about the tourist trap of Bled. LAKE BOHINJ |
| If you prefer your lakes on a grander, more impressive scale, this is the one for you. As with all of our hotels, the two we have in Bohinj are far and away the best in the area. Talking of the area, there are plenty of things to do: horse riding, fishing, hiking, climbing; and plenty of things to not do: lolling, gazing, grazing and being. Oh, and do take the car train to Most na Soči - an unforgettable experience. Slovenia's grow'd up lake. |

KRANJSKA GORA & PODKOREN |
| This is the properly mountainous region of Slovenia. Home of the country's national emblem, Mount Triglav (pron. Triglow), which soars imperiously above the Triglav National Park. The area is rich in thousands of plant and animal species, while the human inhabitants are jolly friendly. If you like mountains and snow, this is the place for you (it is also the place for World skiing championships and the world's longest ski jump, at Planica). If you like mountains but don't like snow, it's also fantastic in the summer. |

IDRIJA |
| If you want to feel fairly certain that your holiday stories won't be met with, "Oh, yes, I've been there," Idrija is the place for you. Although only an hour's drive from Ljubljana, Idrija feels as if it is in the depths of old Europe. Here you will find one of our favourite hotels in the world... from which you can busy yourself with the scenery, fishing, hiking, biking, visiting the old mercury mine. GORIŠKA
BRDA |
| As the smallest part of one of
Slovenia's smallest wine growing regions - Primorska -
Goriška Brda might not seem to be worthy of the trip.
However, if you think of it as viticulture's Secret Garden,
you won't be far wrong. Rolling hills of vineyards (if
you roll too far you'll be in Italy), a host of wineries
and the chance to sample some rare, but world-class wines make this a wine-lover's dream. |

ISTRA - Where have all the hotels gone?! |
Slovenska Istra is Slovenia's bit of the larger region of Istria, most of which is in Croatia... but the best part (in Slovenia, natch) includes the towns of Koper, Piran, Portorož and Izola, while the hinterland includes the Drava River Valley, which is a national park.
We no longer consider any of the hotels in the coastal towns to be of a standard that we feel comfortable with (or, for Stephen Fry, "of a standard with which we feel comfortable") - including the super-bling Kempinski.
We will soon be writing a guide to the towns themselves, as they are certainly worth a visit: but do not stay and do not eat. |
 |
 |
ŠTAJERSKA
Not hilly, not flat: kind of rolling flats. Bordering on Croatia to the east, Austria to the north and home to Slovenia's second city, Maribor. It is also home to some of Slovenia's best white wines, so that's good enough reason to visit. |

BOLFENK
The adrenaline capital of north east Slovenia, this place will leave you physically exhausted... yet mentally calm and at peace with the world. Great for all kinds of activities during the warmer months, while the winter sees plenty of snow for the slopes. Fabulous views all around... all the way to the vineyards, where we can arrange wine tastings.
Great for: Families, couples and groups looking for a little excitement. More... |

PRLEKIJA |
| Just south of the River Mura, a region of rolling plains (as opposed to actual hills) and vineyards. Being flatter than most of the rest of the country, it is great for walking and biking. Much of the food is influenced by the neighbouring Hungarians. |

DOLENJSKA
Bordering Croatia in the south
east of the country is Dolenjska (pron. Dolenska) - through which the Krka river flows. The landscape

forestation and the beautiful Gorjanci mountain range.
There are also many castles, including Žužemberk, Ribnica,
Brežice and Mokrice... and of course, Otočec - the only
river island castle in Slovenia. The area is also home
to many spas and wellness centres. |
