Christmas and New Year in Slovenia |
During the Tito/Yugoslavia years, Christmas was a very quiet affair, consisting mostly of a visit to church for the devout, and eating duck for anyone who was interested. In recent years though, it has become more of a family celebration, while hotels and restaurants introduce special festive menus and events. A bit like it used to be here, really. In fact, during the whole of December there is a fabulous winter fair in Ljubljana's old town - great for just wandering around, buying a trinket or three and supping a mulled wine or four.
New Year (Silvester), on the other hand, is, has and always will be a cause for celebrations of all kinds: parties, fireworks, quaffing and scoffing are all indulged by most - although many of you will also find it easy to get away and find a quiet place to usher in the New Year.
Note that the best places get booked very quickly for the festive season, so, as they say, book early!
